What’s A Book Blurb?

A book blurb is a short description about your book. It’s meant to entice the reader to want to pick it up and read your story. It’s not meant to give the entire plot away. Sadly, however, I have seen a lot of blurbs with too much detail. Authors, you need to leave the readers wanting. If they learn all there is to know from the back cover, what’s the point of them buying the book?

Start off with introducing your main characters. Who are they? What troubles them? Keep it short and sweet. Two paragraphs, one for each main character.

Example:

Jackson Stone, confirmed bachelor, has always been a ladies’ man. Charismatic and attentive, women find him irresistibly charming; he has no problems wooing them into bed. Until Shelby Needles crosses his path.

Shelby is thoroughly acquainted with men like Jackson. Her ex-husband had a way with women too–long into their marriage. Recovering from a messy divorce, the very last thing she needs to do is jump into Jackson Stone’s bed; even if he does promise their coupling would be nothing short of explosive.

Next give us a short description of their conflict. What tests them? Sometimes you may include something that brings them together but pulls them apart at the same time. In this next example, I kept it short and demonstrated Jackson’s conflict.

Example:

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Jackson sets his sights on getting the fiery little redhead beneath him. But if he’s not careful, more than his stud reputation could be at stake. For once, he may have just met his match.

And that’s it! Give the readers enough to tease them, but don’t give them everything.

Note: This applies to all fictional stories, not just romance.
